Getting Around

Whether you are arranging your own transport or visiting as part of an organised excursion you’ll soon discover that Ayrshire is well connected with excellent road networks and transport links to and around the region whether travelling by car, bus, train, or ferry making exploring the south west of Scotland easy and enjoyable.

By Air

Prestwick International Airport has a number of direct flights bringing visitors from Europe and Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are both within easy reach and have excellent flight connections across the UK and internationally. In addition to flying, visitors from Ireland and Northern Ireland can make use of the ferry connections from Belfast and Larne to Cairnryan on Ayrshire’s doorstep and there is also a seasonal high-speed service from Larne to Troon.

By Road

Ayrshire benefits from easy access from the main motorway network in Scotland and the north of England - and with the M77 and M74 extensions it's now possible to travel to the very heart of Ayrshire's golfing country on nothing but motorway from Edinburgh, Glasgow and every major departure linked to the M6.

The ferry ports from Ireland are served by the A77 and the trip north is around an hour for many parts of Ayrshire.

There are regular coach services from Glasgow to the major towns in Ayrshire and and a reliable network of local bus services within Ayrshire and on the islands of Arran and Cumbrae.

By Sea

Ayrshire is easily accessible form Ireland by ferry throughout the year via the new terminal at Cairnryan from Larne and Belfast.

By Rail

Ayrshire is once again blessed with excellent rail networks and historically much of the Ayrshire coast thrived on the railways indeed Trump Turnberry was once a Railway Hotel! Trains run on twice hourly schedules from Glasgow to Ayr and Kilmarnock and all stops in between making it an option to travel without a car.
